Jeff became Northstar's second pastor in 2009 after the retirement of founding pastor Bob Jackson. He and his family are from southeast Arkansas where he served as a campus minister at the University of Arkansas at Monticello for eight years before planting Journey Church there and serving as its founding pastor for six years.
Jeff loves coffee and is still trying to decide if he's a "runner." He's a former fantasy football champion, the author of Super Center Savior, an Apple fan boy and a teller of bad puns.
Julie grew up in Augusta, Georgia. She received a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Georgia State University in 2004 and a Master’s degree as a Reading Specialist from Radford University in 2010. She previously worked as a classroom teacher and reading specialist in the area.
Children's Ministry Assistant
Katie grew up in Warren, Michigan. She then moved to Orlando, Florida. While working for the mouse at the most magical place on earth, Walt Disney World, she studied Early Childhood Education. She worked as a Lead Teacher at the YMCA Child Development Center at Walt Disney World Resort and then became a professional nanny for 9 years. In 2012 Katie and her husband, Jonathan, had their first child and decided to move closer to family which led them to Blacksburg, Virginia. They have been attending Northstar Church since 2013. Katie enjoys being outdoors, reading, working out, saving money, and spending her time with her family. She has three children, Kayla, Cale, and Benjamin.
Erin grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania then attended Messiah College where she played lacrosse and earned her degree in Exercise Science with a minor in Marriage and Family Counseling. Since then she has been working in the health and fitness field in various positions.
Graduates & Professionals Minister
Matt was raised on a small farm outside of Gettysburg, PA. He was homeschooled K-12, but don't hold that against him. Upon graduating high school, Matt went to work in the outdoor recreation industry, which ignited a passion for the outdoors that he still carries today.
Tanner has lived in the New River Valley most of his life. He is a musician, businessperson, and a wannabe world traveler. He earned his master’s degree in Philosophical Apologetics at Biola University in 2011.
Accounting & Management
Nicole grew up in Woodstock, Virginia and then went on to earn Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Accounting Information Systems from Virginia Tech. After college, she spent six years working in taxation and then transitioned over the following years to working in accounting for several small businesses. Some of Nicole’s favorites: spending time with her husband, Nick, and their three amazing kids; a hot, fresh cup of coffee; and a mind-clearing run on a cool day.
Nick is from Danville, VA, and is majoring in Philsophy, Politics, and Economics and minoring in Leadership and Social Change. He has been involved with BCM since his freshman year of college where God has grown his heart for evangelism and loving people. In his free time, Nick likes reading, running, being outside, and just hanging out with other people.
Lissa is originally from Midlothian, VA, and completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Literature and Language at Virginia Tech. Currently, she is a Masters student with Liberty University Online, where she is getting a Master’s degree in Secondary Education. At Virginia Tech she was involved with YoungLife, where she developed a passion for middle school students, and teaching them about how loved they are by Jesus. In her free time, Lissa loves to workout at Tech MMA & Fitness Academy where she teaches a kids’ American Ninja Warrior class, go climbing at Crimper’s Climbing Gym, and do anything outside. In the summers, though you can find Lissa at Lake Gaston where she loves to spend time with her family.
Chris is a junior at Virginia Tech from Charlotte, NC studying Mechanical Engineering. He serves as a Young Life Capernaum leader, working to build relationships and share the gospel with teens and young adults with special needs in the New River Valley. In his free time, Chris enjoys playing piano and guitar, rooting for Charlotte sports, playing Spikeball and Settlers of Catan.
Erika is 22 years old and was born and raised in Blacksburg. She is a youth leader for the middle and high school girls and has been addicted to caffeine for three years. If you ask her about school, she will laugh and tell you not to ask that question. In her spare time, Erika enjoys napping, playing in the water, and spending time with her dog, Tripp, who happens to be the goodest boy.
Our Leadership Board are a group of men that serve the church as spiritual shepherds. Their primary role is to undergird and support the church staff through enouragement, guidance and counsel. Current elders are: Kirkland Broadwell, Shane Carver, Darrell Cook, Trey Moore, Jeff Noble and Jim Rancourt.
