Northstar Church: News

Dave Farris preaching Sunday, Feb 27

Feb 23, 2011   //   News

Our Connections Team Leader, Dave Farris, will be preaching this Sunday, February 27 in both services. We’re grateful for our gifted teaching team that God has given Northstar. Dave will be continuing to teach from Luke in our current series of “Follow Who?!”

The passage is Luke 9:18-21 where Jesus asks, “Who do you say that I am?” It will be a powerful morning for us as a church to help one another and our guests direct all our affection upon who Jesus really is.

Baby dedication this Sunday, Feb 27

Feb 23, 2011   //   News

This Sunday, February 27th we will be having a Children’s Dedication. This is a special time for Northstar to wrap our arms around families with young children and support them in their commitment to raise their children in the light of Christ. It’s a special time for parents as they commit before our church body and to the Lord to raise their children in the wisdom and instruction of the Lord.

The dedication will take place during the 9:00 service, and a time of celebration will be held between the 9:00 and 11:00 services in the cafeteria.

Prayer Focus & Renewal meetings

Feb 16, 2011   //   News

On February 20-22, Jackie Flake will be back with us! Jackie is the founding pastor of C3 (Cross Community Church) in Fort Smith, Arkansas. We are excited about his availability to come and share with us we focus on the theme of making much of God in prayer. During this series of gatherings, we will be focusing on the centrality of intimacy in prayer which leads to constancy in mission.

Can you imagine what Northstar (or your church and ministry) would look like if its people – members and attenders – were saturated in joyful, dependent, and consistent prayer – both alone and corporately?!!

Here’s the opportunities we’re scheduling:

  • Sunday a.m. – Jackie will preach in both services at Northstar
  • Sunday p.m. – Jackie to speak to the GLAD Mission group (this will be a “closed” group since the participants are helping us support these times; however, staff and admin teams and spouses are welcome)
  • Monday pm (6:30) – Jackie will speak/teach on prayer and we’ll have opportunity for Q&A.
Location: Holiday Inn conference room on Prices Fork & University.
  • Tuesday pm (7:00) – Jackie will stop by the BCM for the beginning of their 633 gathering, but at 7:00, he’ll speak again on prayer, helping us think strategically and practically about implementing it into the life of our church, families and small groups; again, there will be Q&A, feedback.
    Location: Luci Monroe’s in Christiansburg.

We hope you’ll join on us Sunday morning for this special opportunity. In addition, don’t miss the chance to participate in Monday and Tuesday nights. If you can’t make both, at least come to one! We are working on offering childcare for Monday and Tuesday nights. More info to come.

Please be praying to the Father in the meantime and asking Him to pour out His presence, power and understanding on us for these days. Ask God to anoint and direct Jackie in his preparation. Jackie does not so much need to “come up with some stuff about prayer” as he simply needs to share with us out of an overflow of prayer in his own life.

“To Our House ministry” opportunity

Feb 16, 2011   //   News

Fieldstone United Methodist Church in Christiansburg is involved in a ministry called “To Our House” in which they take in about 10 homeless folks for two weeks and provide shelter and meals for them. Northstar has partnered with Fieldstone to provide all the meals including breakfast, lunch, and dinner from Saturday 2/19 – Saturday 3/5.

It’s a wonderful opportunity for families, friends, and our small groups to participate by making a simple dinner and being available to serve and join these folks for a meal. Dinner is at 6:00 pm, and Fieldstone has a kitchen on site if you wanted to cook there. They also have all kinds of kitchen appliances available (crock pots, toasters, etc.). In the two weeks they are at Fieldstone, we will be preparing 13 dinners. If your small group is able to take on one of the dinners, please sign up at the link below! If you have any questions feel free to ask Dave Farris (dave@northstarfamily.org). Karen Minnick (ksaminnick@aol.com) is coordinating this service project for us and will be the point person for meals.

GLAD – Missions Group

Feb 8, 2011   //   News

We look forward with eager anticipation to an unspeakable privilege: to make much of God. You are invited to participate in the GLAD (Go, Lead in Adoration & Discipleship) Missions Group. It is eight sessions over three months that we pray will change your perspective and focus as a world Christian. In fact, if we succeed in our exaltation of His Person over eight sessions together, we will not only have worshiped, but we will have made missionaries of all our participants.

Please register by going to this linkhttp://northstarfamily.wufoo.com/forms/glad-missions-group-registration/

John Piper says in Let the Nations Be Glad that “missions exists because worship doesn’t.” If that thesis is true, and we believe it is, then our goal is to lead you to worship God in with all your heart, mind, soul and strength over eight sessions in such a way that you will join with us in a lifetime pursuit of enjoying God and being consumed with the practice of making others – in all nations – supremely glad in Him as well.

This missions adventure will feature some amazing speakers who are so only because of God’s grace and their faithfulness to magnify Him with their lives. They will travel here from all over to assist us in making much of God. During the group, you’ll hear from Michael Kelley (head of Lifeway’s Threads ministry), Jackie Flake (Pastor at C3 Church in Fort Smith, AR), the Upsteam Collective and missionaries like David & Laura Moench!

We hope this will be one of the most life-changing, theology-shaping and Christ-saturated experiences of your life. You’ll be reading Piper’s book and responding in writing and discussions that will challenge you deeply. Everything we do will lead us to worship and then from worship to make others glad in Him.

Will you prayerfully consider joining us for this faith adventure?

  • 8 sessions
  • $50
  • Begins Sunday night, February 13, 6:00p at the Lancaster House; dates include: February 13, 20; March 13, 20, 27; April 3, 10 and 17.

If money is prohibitive for you, please let us know, and we’ll work to find a scholarship for you!

Please register by going to this linkhttp://northstarfamily.wufoo.com/forms/glad-missions-group-registration/

Our God and His worldwide glory invite us to participate in making much of Him.

“Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you! Let the nations be glad and sing for joy!”

Ordination Service on February 6!

Feb 4, 2011   //   News

We hope that this Sunday is the start of something special at Northstar as we will recognize the clear call of God on Cody Davenport’s life into ministry by ordaining him. His dad, Mark Davenport, will be preaching both services. The actual ordination with laying on of hands will take place during the 9:00 service. In both services, you’ll have an opportunity to hear Cody’s faith story.

We hope you’ll make plans to be a part of the 9:00 service this week. We’ll be opening the doors to the auditorium on the side where the cafe normally is.

As we continue to be a discipling church, we earnestly hope to also be a calling church. It will be exciting in the months and years to come to see all those that God calls to ministry through Northstar! Let’s thank the Lord for how He continues to extend His kingdom through our humble fellowship!
