Hello! My name is Steven Paul and I am the GAP International Ministry Liaison. I am currently a Masters Student in Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech.
I was born in India and my family immigrated to the United States when I was very young, where we eventually settled in the DC metro area. I grew up in a Christian household, as my parents ran a ministry for Indian immigrants in the DC area. However despite my environment I did not actively pursue a relationship with God. My religious life, at that time, was just a bunch of commitments that our ministry did at that time. It lacked the personal connection and relationship with God.
When I started as an undergrad at Virginia Tech, I hesitated to join any campus ministries as I still viewed a relationship with God as a list of commitments and obligations. However still God would not left me drift away. At Tech I was free of the obligations of ministry, but a part of me didn’t want to let go of God. Strangely, I found myself wanting to pray and read the bible more. I wanted to understand for myself the reasons for a faith in Christ. I can not take credit for my faith at that time, as I know that it was only by the grace of God that I pursued him at that time. By his grace I was able to find a community with the campus ministry, Intervarsity, and serve him in different ways through that group.
I started attending Northstar during my junior year of undergrad, however I did not start to become involved until I became a grad student. At Northstar, I have found a community that has supported me as I continue to grow in my faith and has provided me with opportunities to serve God.
One of my favorite verses is Lamentations 3:19-24, “I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall. I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me. Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.”
