On Sunday evening, Connect gathered to cheer on the good ol’ USA in the Olympics. I am not sure if everyone was more excited about the Olympics or Sharon Shockley’s little taste of heaven–brownies.
First up was the diving. Comments were made as far as, “Wow, look at that tiny splash,” or, “How do they do that in complete unison?” It is truly amazing! Then there was women’s gymnastics (my personal favorite). We could not believe our eyes and our ears as they introduced Oksana Chusovitina of Uzbekistan. For those of you who do not know of Chusovitina, she is 41 years old and is competing in her SEVENTH Olympic games. In a sport that is dominated by young women, this woman is incredible! Never have I seen such a young group of people ooh and ahh over a gymnast that was so… and I quote the Connect crew… “OLD.”
I have found that the Olympics is the one time that the USA can truly stand united without much, if any, conflict. Religion or politics, on the other hand, almost EVERYONE has a different perspective or view. But during the Olympics, we truly stand united as the UNITED STATES of America. As Connect college ministry is gearing up for a huge blast of students to arrive we do stand united… united in our love for Jesus Christ and our goal to grow in Truth and have intentional fellowship. The Olympics is a great example of people all coming together for one purpose to cheer and support their country, and as we start this fall semester Connect is coming together under one purpose to fall in love with and stand united behind Christ Jesus.
